Paws Up Stop The EBI San Antonio

The year 2020 and 2021 has not been kind to our fellow paws on the streets.

Rescues, and shelters are having their hands carrying too much weight for what's being demanded for what is needed. A few weeks ago the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services has been declared a KILL SHELTER at 82% a live release rate standard is 90%. Claws and paws are being pointed at in many different directions but no one wants to take responsibility for failure to fix their pet, failure to keep the standard feed/water and shade, or provide a simple vet visit such as deworming/flea prevention. Over the last several weeks tensions have run high including the temperatures. Homes are no longer providing for their furry friends so they are left with the only option is to surrender to a kill shelter with notice knowing that animal will not survive within the next 48 hours. Citizens of San Antonio all the way to Canada (yes Canada) have tried to scramble with a one hour notice to pull 'x' amount of animals and what makes it even worse when the animal that has placement notification gets lost and the animal in question is placed on EBI and by the time they get there it's too late.

Everyone is burned out and trying to dig themselves out of the whole that covid made for us. Animals are dying, cats that came in with their kittens or kittens that came with only their siblings and they never get to make it out the door alive. Because their is just too many to feed, to shelter or provide for financially. And Texas has been the laughing stock out of the United States because our Governor Abbott doesn't want humane living situations for our furry friends. How many more animals both cats and dogs because of very incompetent Governor. How many more animals have to be born because of greed to make a quick buck while the mother is being used and never sees the day of where she can just be herself her true self the cat she wants to be. Texas is more focused on dogs but cats are important as well. Both require food, water, shelter and vetting with responsible pet ownership. While the kittens get to hopefully live the rest of their lives in a home being sold either by a backyard breeder or illegal breeder that is taking short cuts to make a profit. How is that fair to them. How can you live with that knowing that mom will never see her babies again and will never live in a home feeling loved.

It has gotten to the point where San Antonio citizens are fired up about the senseless euthanasia that's happening every single day. To estimate let's say 60 a week including cats and dogs, again this is an estimate since I do not have the current numbers to reflect what is actually being reported. Kittens that are under 8 weeks of age will not count in their system when they should because their lives mattered.

If you are a fellow San Antonio Texan and would like to participate in an event that I was invited to, to show our City of San Antonio Courthouse that there are citizens that do care and they have had enough with the EBIs. Here is some information that you need to know. This is a protest where fellow rescuers will stand outside peacefully with signs stating that their lives mattered. It is called Stop The Killing, scheduled for Thursday, August 12, 2021 from 3p - 6p. Texas is number 2 listed for the most euthanized animals in the United States. If you wish to make a difference in becoming a foster. You can check out our local community groups: SA Cat Rescue, SATX Save Our Strays, SATX Paws At Your Heart, San Antonio Cat Group, SOSA San Our Street Animals . SA Cat Rescue and Save Our Strays has the most involvement with rescues and shelters. All community groups are networks only to provide another avenue to avoid Animal Care Services when the shelter is at full capacity.
