Prep Now Not Later

It's never too early to prepare for any seasonal weather situation.

As a former New Englander (Connecticut) preparation was always key but when people from the South move up North knows absolutely nothing about the snow unless they are in the panhandle part of Texas. As of February 2021 ALL of Texas was closed for approximately two weeks. Yes, Texas was closed. The estimated report was 111 people died in their homes due to power failure and who knows how many pets in those homes died as well. Bats died, I recall seeing on a post from a wildlife rescue mentioning that they had to pick up every single bat and it looked like 5 giant bags. The zookeeper's were distraught that their animals died and their office ended up being a morgue.

I only know of winter preparation and nothing of tornado's, I never had to deal with hurricanes hitting Waterbury, Connecticut hard because Wtby itself was not that close to the water it was more land. We got hit with the rain but never the ocean water that came with it.

The tips I am going to share is what I am aware of not only to prepare for yourself but for your animals as well.

🔥 As for a portable heat source that requires no electricity: Hot Hands they have different sizes one for body and one for hands. If you want a low heat source: Sunbeam Heating Fans. For warming food: If you ever seen those containers underneath food it's like a blue gel in a metal container those are the ones you want, they should be available at any grocery store that has a barbeque section.

🚰 Water: Bottled Water or a Brita container

Refrigeration: To keep your refrigerator sealed; Safety First Multi Purpose Appliance Lock

*Please note once it's placed the sticky part is not able to move, this is a one time placement only.*

🔋 Always have a portable cell phone battery charger. Flashlights. Glowsticks (it's a lot cheaper buying them AFTER the holidays are over).

🍽 Paper plates, bowls, utensils

📍Have an evacuation plan ready. Check out your local City plans for current up to date information on evacuation shelters and resources.

💤 Bedding
*Products from five below*

This is for both humans and animals. Fleece and Sherpa are your best friends when it comes to retaining body heat. Never purchase or use Polyester for the winter. It's more ideal for early spring and fall. Always pay attention to the fabric. If you wish to purchase in bulk your best bet is to go through fabric stores such as JoAnn's or Michael's.

🗔 Insulation: Other than placing a huge thick blanket on the window. There is a plastic window film kit that can be purchased in places such as Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes. Electrical Outlets in the wall, air flows through inside and outside. If you want to control what's going on in your home. 'Socket Sealers' is what you need. You can do this yourself if you are comfortable with it OR hire someone who can winterize your home such as the window film and the electrical outlet sockets. The power needs to be turned off while doing this to avoid any trips to the hospital.

⏻ If you own a home/business/rent. If allowable and you wish to invest in having solar power energy to reduce future events of losing power. This is a referral link
Powur Solar: Miriam Jimenez  to see what can be done for your home/business/rental. What is also needed is a battery to store that solar energy, so when the power goes out in the streets you won't be in the dark. If you rely on a generator please fully educate yourself before purchasing it/using it. When I lived in Connecticut I can recall some reports that generators were misused and can cause an accident without the proper education. Read the manual or if you're going through a representative for either a battery/backup generator read/ask the questions that is a need to know. Not only you're getting involved with it's very resourceful to have. List any important information such as the manufacturer incase there is a recall, save your purchase receipt.

🐈 Make sure your animals have everything they need such as carriers, crates, food, litter, current photos, the vet information such as vaccinations, microchip, if they're fixed.

If you have not already but thought about this Pet Insurance. Aflac has partnered with Trupanion to create a product to give all pet parents peace of mind especially with the two additional riders 💕.

As for the information when getting a quote. The age, breed, and if they are a therapy/assistance animal come into factors. The older they are the higher the cost, the younger they are the less it will cost. The bigger they are same thing as age it can be higher. How pet insurance works.
  • As mentioned:
  • Age
  • Breed
  • Gender (females are more invasive than males)
  • Location
  • If they are a an assistance/therapy animal
  • They can not have a preexisting condition over 30 days
  • If they have an accident during the 30 day waiting period it will not be covered.
  • Once inquiring for the insurance you have 30 days to change the quote, after 30 days it's locked in for 12 months. i.e. lower premium, higher deductible (what you owe by contract agreement) to satisfy.
  • If healthy you can try to adjust the monthly premium with a full veterinary documentation.
  • If the premium has not been paid, the claim will be denied on the month of the accident was filed.
  • If you wish to CANCEL the first issued policy it must be done before 30 days, preferably 7 days before day 30.
  • You can not cancel the policy after 30 days, if you wish to withdraw your pet from the policy. Still living one month before the scheduled 12th calendar date for renewal you may contact that pet insurance policy to cancel the renewal. If deceased, documentation must be provided from the veterinarian to cease the incoming premium charges.
  • Always check out the provided document to see what is covered and what is excluded.
